Description
The classic Irish dress renaissance gown is inspired by the artwork of Lucas DeHeere in 1537. He drew several of the very few depictions of Irish folk in the renaissance era and the women are all wearing a variation of this gown. The Renaissance Gown was worn from early Tudor times through the late Elizabethan era almost everywhere from England to furthest southern Spain, especially by the middle classes. Sometimes it is referred to as a kirtle, a gown, or an overdress. Regardless of the name it is worn with any number of underpinnings and layers; from a full sleeved leine to a chemise and skirt, partlettes, or aprons.
This Irish Dress is full length, to the top of your shoe. It is constructed of a linen blend outer fabric with an interlining and linen blend bodice lining. This gives a slightly softer fit than a corset and is very comfortable. It has 4 pieces flexible steel boning in front for shaping. Sizes 16 – 20 have an extra row of boning for support. You do *not* need to wear a bra with this gown properly fitted. The front has a grommet lacing closure, with a split skirt front or a closed front as noted.
You should hang the dress outside in the breeze now and then; be sure to turn it inside out and put it in the shade. It is best to launder this gown only occasionally. In case of spills or stains spot treat it and hand-wash the immediate area. After washing, you will probably want to touch it up with a hot steam iron. I fully wash mine about twice a year, by hand, and hang it dry.
